Just sayin'

I was just watching a rerun of The Mentalist on the telly where Cho and Rigsby needed to jump over a big fence (and they did so in an, might I add, everyday manner) and a thought came to my head: why do our police officers need to meet the highest physical standards and, yet, need not be in the (at least) equal intellectual shape?

  1. Physical strength is perhaps valued over mental strength? Mental strength is a bit together to measure than intellectual strength as well, it's a flawed system but it's the only system we have I guess.

I love the The Mentalist by the way, nice taste buddy :)

  5. Good question. I'm thinking those that are smart, get promoted to detective quickly.

  6. Many reasons i guess. Really smart people dont want to be a cop. Also the cops you see on the streets, are not the smartest, the smartests are in the labs or working as detectives or stuff like that.

  12. The answer is simple: Not many people are intellegent and if you had to be to be a cop we wouldn't have many cops.

  15. How would you measure that? If you leave it up to someone it can pass as discrimination. If you leave it up to IQ you're missing out on a lot of people who's minds work different (but are still smart, you know the ones right?)

I agree, but it's just.. difficult.

    Also, is Bersecules a cop?

  16. I totally agree. I believe the educational standards for our peace officers should be increased. They should also receive more in-depth psychological training.

  18. @all: The cops from my tend to be really borderline retarded. But some of the points made here in the comments actually make some sense.

  20. I wish we had some more intelligent cops. I imagine the comments are right regarding the intelligent ones moving up the ranks while the toolsheds for brains stay on standard patrol.
